Some materials just keep us coming back for more.
We recently wrapped a project using microcement in the showers, on the fireplace, and on the vent hood, with Roman clay on the walls, and it perfectly captures why these finishes are so loved. There’s something about plaster finishes and troweled materials like Roman clay and microcement that feels both elevated and effortless at the same time. The soft movement, the subtle texture, the way light hits it… it adds depth without demanding attention. It shifts throughout the day, which is what makes it feel so alive.
Part of the appeal is sensory. Good design isn’t just about how something looks, it’s about how it feels. These finishes bring a warmth and tactility that make a space feel more lived-in and grounded, even when everything else is minimal. It’s also something clients are gravitating toward when they want a space to feel calm, layered, and a little less predictable.
They’re also incredibly functional when used in the right places. Microcement is ideal for bathrooms and showers because it creates a seamless, waterproof surface with no grout lines, which means less maintenance and a cleaner overall look. Roman clay, on the other hand, is perfect for walls where you want that soft, matte, hand-applied texture.
Where I tend to recommend it:
- Showers and bathrooms using microcement for a seamless, durable finish
- Walls using Roman clay for subtle movement and depth
- Fireplace surrounds and vent hoods
- Accent moments that benefit from a handmade feel
That said, a little goes a long way. I’m always thinking about where it will have the most impact, not just adding it for the sake of it. It’s most impactful when it has room to breathe.
If this is something you’ve been considering, it’s a great place to start layering in more depth and texture. As always, happy to talk through where it could make the most impact in your space. Email me today for a free design consultation.
